IPL 2024 FULL SQUADS AFTER AUCTION

Ahead of IPL 2024 Mumbai Indians named Hardik Pandya as Captain for IPL 2024 in place of Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indians revealed Hardik Pandya as their new captain for the 2024 Indian Premier League, replacing Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma with IPL trophy

In a significant move, Mumbai Indians have announced a change in leadership for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Hardik Pandya will now lead the Mumbai Indians , taking over the captaincy from the highly successful  captain Rohit Sharma. This transition marks the end of an era, as Rohit Sharma, the joint-most successful captain in IPL history, passes on the baton after a decade of thrilling highs.

Rohit Sharma's Legacy:

Rohit Sharma's captaincy was synonymous with success, leading Mumbai Indians to an impressive five IPL titles, a feat shared only with MS Dhoni of Chennai Super Kings. Before 2013 Mumbai Indians has not won any trophy but Under his guidance, Mumbai reached five IPL finals, emerging victorious in each, making the team one of the most successful and loved in the tournament's history.

Hardik Pandya's Return and Mumbai's Vision:

The leadership change coincides with Mumbai Indians' strategic move to bring Hardik Pandya back to his original franchise after a successful stint as captain with the Gujarat Titans. While this development may surprise some, Mumbai had a well-defined plan when they traded Hardik from the Titans. The franchise identified Hardik as Rohit's successor, aiming for a seamless transition, echoing the legacy-building philosophy that has characterized Mumbai Indians over the years.

What Mumbai Indians Management said:-

Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai's global head of performance, highlighted the franchise's commitment to being future-ready. He expressed gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership, acknowledging his role in solidifying Mumbai Indians' place as one of the finest teams in IPL history. Jayawardene welcomed Hardik Pandya as the new captain, expressing confidence in his ability to lead and build upon the team's success.

Rohit's Stint as Captain:

Rohit Sharma led Mumbai 163 times in the IPL and the Champions League T20, securing 91 victories and reaching five IPL finals, winning all of them. However, the last three seasons saw a dip in Mumbai's fortunes, failing to make the playoffs in 2021 and 2022 and exiting the 2023 tournament with a loss to the Titans.

Future Implications:

The captaincy change at Mumbai Indians raises questions about a potential shift in leadership for India's T20I team. While Rohit Sharma currently captains the team in all formats, his absence from T20Is since the 2022 T20 World Cup has opened the door for alternative leaders. Hardik Pandya, who has captained India in T20Is, could be a contender, though he is currently sidelined due to an ankle injury.

Fans Reaction :-

Although fans are not happy with this move of Mumbai Indians. They want to see Rohit Sharma as their captain. Mumbai Indians has become the synonyms of Rohit Sharma for fans.  Mumbai Indians Social Media pages have lost almost 2 lakhs followers after the announcement of this news this news. Fans have not taken this news happily. Some fans have posted videos and image of burning MI uniform.

Conclusion:

Only in the growing T20 format was Dhoni the captain of India when CSK selected him. He would soon dominate other media and rise to prominence as one of India's most important leaders. Due to his merit and weight in the IPL, Rohit was appointed captain. Hardik is worth investing in and appears to be a calculated step forward rather than a wild gamble, but there is no guarantee that he will become a pantheon player or even as successful as Rohit or Dhoni.

Both Rohit and Hardik might benefit from the move. At 36, Rohit is getting nearer to the end of his career. The demands could bring him down; he is the nation's all-format captain. He would suffer physical and psychological effects from the year-long grind.

As the IPL 2024 season approaches, Mumbai Indians fans eagerly anticipate a new chapter under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. The blend of experience from Rohit Sharma and the dynamic leadership of Pandya sets the stage for an intriguing season, where the team will aim to reclaim its former glory. Only time will reveal the impact of this leadership transition on Mumbai Indians' quest for success in the upcoming IPL season.

Mumbai Indians IPL 2024 auction preview: Strengths

Strong batting order

With Rohit and Ishan at top and Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera, Tim David and  now Hardik in the middle Mumbai's batting is looking lethal in this competition previous year they lack finishers but with Hardik return to MI their batting looks complete now . They looks like they can score 230+ on any day.

Champion Captain in Rohit Sharma

There is no doubt about Rohit’s captainship skill which we saw recently in World cup 2023. Coming to IPL also Rohit has been a phenomenal skipper, with all five titles of MI coming under him. He has utilised his resources arguably well in the past and is one of the few skippers who has managed to groom the young talent well.

Mumbai Indians IPL 2024 auction preview: Weaknesses

Weak spin department

Spin department has been a concern for MI since Harbhajan Singh and Rahul Cahar left MI. Although Piyush Chawla performed will for MI last year, getting 22 wickets, he has been inconsistent in the tournament before that, picking up 16 wickets in three seasons. MI do not have another experienced spinner alongside him, making them one of the few teams without a reliable spin unit. Mumbai Indians would ideally want a spinner who is plying his trade for the international side currently to bolster their  weak spin bowling attack.

Pacers for Bumrah's
back up

Jasprit Bumrah no doubt is the best white-ball bowler currently but he also need an experienced quick alongside him. Jason Behrendorff and Akash Madhwal are the quick in the squad but they can be expensive on their off day. Without a reliable bowler alongside Bumrah, batters will look to play out the India pacer and take on the others, reducing his effectiveness. : With the batting heavily reliant on Indian players, Mumbai can afford to even afford two overseas quicks.

Here are Five Players MI Could Target in IPL 2024:

1 . Wanindu Hasaranga

Hasranga with trophy (image source- Twitter)

Wanindu Hasaranga is known as a game-changer in T20, and Mumbai Indians lack a genuine wrist-spinner to partner with Piyush Cahwla.  Hasaranga can be best pick by Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2024 auction as they are weak in spin department for a long time now and since MI has released its regular spinner Hrithik Shokeen and Raghav Goyal from their squad. Moreover, they would need someone to partner with Piyush Chawla in the spin department, and Hasaranga can fit nicely. His power hitting ability could be handy for MI lower down the order.

2. Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Mujeeb Ur Rahman (image source -twitter)

Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman emerges as a promising prospect for MI. With his variations and ability to outfox batters, he could be the missing piece in MI’s spin puzzle. Considering the evolving nature of T20 cricket, investing in a quality spinner like Mujeeb will align with MI’s future-thinking approach. His bowling can also be handy in Wankhede, where the runs come by easily. Mujeeb has worked on his power-hitting, and MI can use him in lower order with bat also.

3. Mitchell Starc
Mitchell Starc (image source -twitter)

Mitchell Starc‘s vast experience and stature make him an attractive prospect for any franchises, and MI is no exception. The left-arm pacer’s ability to deliver under pressure could make him a game-changer for MI in crucial moments. He can swing the bowl I upfront in powerplay and can partner Bumrah in death overs.

4. Gerald Coetzee

Coetzee recently got married (image source- twitter)

The dynamic South African pacer Gerald Coetzee who has been making waves in the cricketing world recently. His stellar performance in World Cup 2023 has caught the attention of many, making him a potential target for MI. Coetzee’s ability to bowl with pace and precision can add a new dimension to MI’s formidable bowling attack on Wankhede pitch.

5. Shardul Thakur

Sahrdul Thakur (Image source- Twitter)

In a surprising yet strategic move, MI could turn their attention to this Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur. Although his performance was below par in the last IPL season with KKR but Shardul’s ability to deliver impactful performances with both bat and ball is well-known. His return to his home city may bring best out of him and he can well partner Hardik Pandya along with Tim David in batting and he can do one or two over death over bowling which MI might need

 Conclusion:

As MI gears up for the IPL 2024 auction, the acquisition of the right players is paramount. With a mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talents, MI aims to address its weaknesses and strengthen its quest for another IPL title. Best of luck to MI and its passionate fans from Cricessence!
