His forceful strokeplay and self-assured manner gave India's innings impetus and strengthened their position against the English attack. England's Bowling looked rusty on Day 1-

The English bowlers faced an uphill task against the determined Indian batsmen. While Mark Wood impressed with his pace and aggression, picking up crucial wickets, the rest of the bowling attack struggled to contain the Indian onslaught. Despite their efforts, they found it hard to break the partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja, which propelled India to a formidable total by stumps of Day 1.
